Sydney’s maiden Climate Action Week Sydney is drawing closer to its official launch, which will see a number of events discuss the actions of individuals, communities, and organisations in tackling climate change.
Held from 13-19 May 2024, the week-long program comprises 75 events that Sydneysiders are encouraged to attend. Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore AO believes the event will cement Sydney’s reputation as a climate-conscious city.
“With about 75 percent of global emissions generated by cities, climate action at a city level is critical,” she says.
“At the City of Sydney, climate action is our key priority. Through electrification, active transport projects, city greening and collaboration with businesses and residents, we're striving to make our City more resilient and sustainable.
“We are proud to lead by example and encourage action from other governments with ambitious targets and policies, advocacy, and achievements.”
City of Sydney Councillor and Sustainability Awards Ambassador HY William Chan says that the program builds on the reputation Australia and the wider Pacific are forging in regards to being leaders in climate mitigation and adaptation.
“As the world's first responders to the climate emergency, cities like Sydney highlight the vital role of local communities and local action in driving global solutions,” he says.
“The launch of Climate Action Week in our region underscores the urgency of adopting a more inclusive approach, one that embraces the expertise of Indigenous communities across the Pacific towards strengthening regional climate efforts.”
