Some of the world’s most exciting architects will be in Sydney next week, here to address the Royal Australian Institute of Architects’ annual conference, which this year will be called ‘Imagining Architecture.’
Waro Kishi from Japan will be showing how he has used prefabricated building material to reduce building costs, but applied the highest design standards to produce outstanding buildings. Kishi’s view of planning regulations are somewhat controversial as Tom Heneghan in the 2G Waro Kishi volume writes - “he decries the planning regulations for the historic districts of Kyoto that require pitched tiled roofs and wood louvre screens.. that make the place look ‘like a back lot used for shooting samurai movies,.”
Inaki Abalos from Abalos + Herreros in Spain also prefers standard prefabricated building materials, however with a particular emphasis on recycling.
In the directly names Recycling Plant of Urban Remainders, Madrid, they not only incorporated a museum area to encourage people’s environmental awareness, but also planned the 25-year lifecycle of the building to conclude with the building itself being dismantled and its materials recycled.
The other speakers are: Rick Joy, West Jones, USA; Christian Sumi, Switzerland; Adam Caruso, UK; Chris Kelly, NZ; and Australian, Sean Godsell.
Ian Moore of Engelen Moore who developed the conference program was responsible for selecting the speakers. “I deliberately chose speakers who are pushing boundaries, breaking or bending rules to produce architecture that is challenging and above all inspirational” he says.
