THIESS has been awarded a $40 million contract to construct the facility which will house the Australian Synchrotron at Monash University in Melbourne.
The completed 10,600m2 facility will include the synchrotron machine, laboratories and technical facilities. A synchrotron produces intense beams of light which are used to investigate the composition of matter and produce detailed images.
The total cost of establishing the synchrotron is $206 million, and is due for completion in 2007.
