Independent Cement and Lime releases the ASA Conference Brochure. The Sustainability and Slag conference 2007 focused on Sustainability, Construction materials and the bottom line.
The one day conference included a range of workshops helpful for the people in the construction industry. The important aspects of the Sustainability and Slag conference 2007 includes the following:
Sustainability and the Bottom Line
This stream involved an innovative panel discussion with leaders in sustainable design and construction through the entire change from building owners to material suppliers. This expert panel discussed about the main challenges to furthering sustainability initiatives in construction and possible building material solutions.
Alternative raw materials use in Construction sector: Legal / Regulatory Issues
This stream explored the legal/regulatory impediments which frustrate the potential use of alternative raw materials (ARM’s) in the manufacture of cement and concrete, a key issue identified by the Cement Industry Action Agenda (CIAA).
Objective:
To identify pathways for government and industrial actions that can lead to the removal of legal or regulatory barriers for utilisation, thus increasing the uptake of alternative raw materials and supplementary cementitious materials such as iron and steel slags.
Aims for the Workshop
- To define jurisdictional approaches towards sustainable resource management.
- To collate views from jurisdictions on appropriate methods to approving the use of by-products or waste products of other industrial, agricultural or municipal processes.
- To identify how government and industry can better manage by-product resource streams.
Slag Pavement Workshop
this workshop focused on the issues surrounding the design, construction and maintenance of slag pavements and the benefits of using slag pavements in various applications. It informed the potential users of the various products available and the appropriate use of each product.
Objective:
To outline appropriate design procedures for the use of slag pavements and address concerns identified in the construction and maintenance of slag pavements. The benefits of slag pavement material over natural resources and other recycled material will also be discussed, with a focus on WOLC and sustainability.
Aims for the Workshop
- To identify appropriate design procedures.
- To provide examples of appropriate and inappropriate uses of slag pavement materials.
- To address some of the myths surrounding slag pavement materials.
- To provide examples of user experiences and any difficulties encountered.
- To provide a forum for discussion of issues related to slag pavement construction for designers, contractors and asset owners/ managers.
- To promote the use of slags as a sustainable and viable pavement material alternative.
