A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for infrastructure and housing projects has been signed between Queensland’s Department of Public Works and the Republic of Vanuatu’s Department of Infrastructure and Public Utilities.
The MoU will facilitate skills transfer on a fee for service basis and help establish a range of collaborative projects of benefit to government agencies and aligned private sector companies. Robert Schwarten, Queensland minister for Public Works & Housing, said that, through funding from AusAID, the Department had already supplied computers, electronics, office furniture, school stationery, teaching resources and earthmoving machinery spare parts to the Vanuatu government.
"This MOU provides further opportunities for my department to gain some of the $34 million upcoming infrastructure projects funded by various aid organisations. Other government agencies will also be able to benefit and leverage off the MoU, such as the Main Roads Department, whose RoadTek business unit will provide training in road maintenance for Vanuatu technical staff, with activities to be undertaken in Rockhampton,” said Schwarten.
