PETER Stewart, engineering manager with Barclay Mowlem, has won the 2005 Civil Engineer of the Year award given by Engineers Australia. Stewart’s significant contribution to the Australian civil engineering profession, his leadership in setting new industry standards, and his dedication to fostering the next generation of Australian engineers earned him this award.
The Civil College Board of Engineers Australia’s panel of judges assessed nominees who were eminent academics and other eminent civil engineering professionals. The Chair of the Civil College Board, Steve Finlay, said, “Peter Stewart’s nomination met all our criteria for engineering excellence and leadership and he is certainly a professional benchmark for current and future civil engineers”.
In nominating Stewart for the award, David Hudson, managing director of Barclay Mowlem, said, “Peter Stewart manages to raise the bar for the engineering profession – he’s the engineer’s engineer – a hands-on practitioner and an engineering leader. His winning formula is underpinned by his technical capabilities, his ability to inspire confidence in others, generate motivation, and lead people to achieve their personal best.”
Stewart has over 30 years of practical experience in construction, having worked for major construction companies in South Africa, Hong Kong and Ireland, as well as over 15 years in a variety of Australian projects.
Some award winning Australian projects have included: the engineering design of the two-bridge solution to re-open the tourist drive along Lawrence Hargrave Drive between Clifton and Coalcliff in NSW; the Alice Springs to Darwin Railway; refurbishment of Sydney’s heritage listed Iron Cove Bridge; the construction of Australia’s first bioreactor at Woodlawn in NSW; and the design and construction of the longest double curvature incrementally launched bridge in the Southern Hemisphere – the Woronora Bridge in Sutherland, South Sydney.
Stewart has a Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) degree from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia. Past winners of the Civil Engineer of the Year award include Bill Wild, Harry Poulos, Wal King, Max Ervin, Rory Nathan and Doug Price.
