No place like home
Three homes destined for low income Australian families are nearing completion in Bayswater, Victoria, part of a major effort by charitable organisation, Habitat for Humanity Australia and the latest of 30 homes built by the group.
Those who receive homes pay a price well below current market values and receive a no-profit, interest-free loan. Michael Pailthorpe, ceo of Habitat for Humanity says the organisation’s ability to deliver on projects depends on the level of community and business donations of cash, labour and materials.
“These projects could not happen without the support of volunteers and corporate sponsorship without the donation of the roofing materials by BHP Coated Steel,” he says. The three homes in Bayswater feature corrugated roofing and ridge caps made from BHP Colorbond prepainted steel.
Habitat for Humanity has completed 110,000 homes in 79 countries and currently completes a new home somewhere in the world every 26 minutes. It hopes to build a further 100,000 homes in the next five years.
