Modern, Art Deco looks in new furniture lines

Contemporary designs remain an important part of furniture debuts as more manufacturers are looking to draw from the growing market of young consumers as well as the older consumers who prefer a modern twist. Art Deco influences also abound, as do updated looks for more traditional lines.

There aren't too many big name debuts this go-round, though licensed lines like Jessica McClintock at American Drew and Cristina Ferrare at Magnussen Home are expanding their offerings.

Two named collections worth noting, however, are the Robert Idol Collection debuting at Lane (Idol also is launching a line at Currey & Company and CAS) and Kelly Hoppen at Century. Idol's line gives Lane an urban-contemporary offering it's not had before and Hoppen brings an Asian-contemporary look to the more traditional Century.

Highlights

American Drew, IHFC-C926 — Jessica McClintock's Vintage Collection of bedroom, dining and occasional is offered in a light golden cashew tone accentuated with delicate painted accents and textured painted pistachio-tone finish on some pieces. Some occasional pieces feature mirrored glass accents.

Bassett Furniture, IHFC-C1200 — West End Collection has classic lines with a contemporary flair achieved with true brushed nickel hardware, bow-front profiles and a dark cherry finish. Noting trends in the customization and make-it-mine markets, there's a Simply Yours Custom Bedroom line with five bed styles.

Bernhardt, IHFC-D601 — Eden Park is transitional or mildly traditional, depending on accessories, in a grand scale with English designs, intricate carvings, scrollwork and more. The company also bows in with Miraval, inspired by the rural valleys of Provence with predominantly French styling and British Passages, a campaign collection with a hint of British West Indies with black tea and ginger brown finishes.

Broyhill, IHFC-C600 — Broyhill celebrates a century with its Broyhill 100th Anniversary Collection, an 18th-century collection in okume crotch veneers with mahogany borders. It also offers Harbor Mist, a transitional neoclassical collection with patchwork olive ash burls with a golden glowing finish, and quartered ash borders, cove molding, nickel accents and hardware.

Century, MS 500 — Kelly Hoppen for Century is an Asian-influenced contemporary line in white oak veneers and flor morado solids, with an open grain finish and features like floating pieces and flush metal accents. Heirlooms by Century is a one-of-a-kind program aimed at the design trade and high-end retailers. The initial introductions include 26 items offered in multiple finishes, including many with options, such as an armoire that can be outfitted as a bar, or a headboard with fabric and wood finish options. Century also bows an outdoor collection, Plen Air. This Arts & Crafts outdoor furniture is crafted from virgin Honduran mahogany with outdoor fabrics.

E. J. Victor, 116 S. Lindsay St. — The Randall Tysinger Collection by E.J. Victor is based on the High Point-based antiques dealer's private collection.

Ferguson Copeland

, 300 E. Green St. — Pompeii is a dining room collection featuring two credenzas, two demilune chests, two curios, tables and chairs with cases decorated by San Francisco artist John Littleboy in scenes from Pompeii and crafted from walnut and cherry with ebony inlays. The collection is based on a successful Pompeii-themed screen.

Fine Furniture Design & Marketing

, US P302 — FFDM expands style and design offerings with the introduction of contemporary and 18th/19th century collections. Couture features updated art-deco designs with stacked, sweeping bases, diamond and reverse matched veneers and custom-designed polished nickel hardware. Modern Classics is a late-18th/early-19th century offering with updated traditional looks in walnut solids with cherry veneers. Its individually arresting designs share a commitment to classic styling and are clean and understated.

Hammary

, IHFC D104 — Three groups are being launched in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation as part of its Design in America program. It's targeting better department and furniture specialty stores for the groups, Traditional, Deco and Prairie. Traditional is inspired by historic antebellum plantation houses of bayou Louisiana and reflect classic American Regency styling in swirl mahogany and cherry veneers. The Deco group takes its flair from the colorful distinctive architecture of Miami's South Beach. The Prairie group's flaky white oak veneers, leaded glass and black metal pulls take their design cues from the Midwestern Mission style homes.

Hickory Chair

, IHFC-W/G800 — The Alexa Hampton Collection by Hickory Chair is a 40-piece classically styled eclectic collection of bedroom, dining and living room furniture, designed by Alexa Hampton, president and featured designer of Mark Hampton Inc. It includes pieces like a tufted fabric bed and dining table with rosewood top. All case pieces are available in 36 finishes and paints.

Hickory White

, 206 E. Green Dr. — European Home is a bedroom, dining and occasional collection, a domestic follow-up to the color and finish story of American Home. It's a more feminine, mainly French look with touches of Louis Philippe and Victorian crafted of rustic cherry veneers and wormy maple solids. Six finishes include Taupe, Bisque, Limestone, Sienna, Hazelnut for wood, and black with custom hardware from Theodore Alexander in Vietnam. Another collection, English Home, features English reproductions in casual pine, oak with barley twists and walnut solids and burl accents with custom hardware. It has William and Mary, Queen Anne and Jacobean influences in moderate scale and it's sourced at Theodore Alexander's Vietnam plant.

Klaussner

, Lewallen Road, Asheboro — Vintner's Blend Collection, the second lifestyle collection from the World Vineyards line, is inspired by California's Napa Valley and blends old and new world looks in a transitional style. Wood and leather accents, as well as bow fronts on case pieces are signatures of this collection, which is crafted from curly walnut veneers topped off with custom designed hardware.

Lane

, IHFC-C800 — Robert Idol Collection of bedroom, dining, occasional and upholstery includes two flavors, the suite-oriented Pacific Heights and eclectic Union Square both with a more contemporary leaning- and Art Deco-influenced styling geared toward a younger demographic.

Magnussen Home

, IHFC-M1010 — Cristina Ferrare's Sunset Boulevard is about 78 pieces in modified Art Deco styling reflecting Hollywood glamour of 1940s. It's available in two exotic veneers, zebrawood and cathedral rosewood, plus olive burl. Functionality, like a swivel cabinet that opens to tri-fold mirror with touch-latch drawers on the side, provides extra value in this collection.

Palliser

, 220 Elm St., fourth floor — Palermo is an eight-piece contemporary bedroom group with a chocolate finish and New Verona is a 12-piece bedroom with new midwall pier design and chocolate finish. Tyrolia is a Biedermeier-inspired transitional look with hardwood solids, figured anigre veneers, scalloped panels and accents available in ambrosia and dark hickory finishes.

Powell Co.

, NFM 100 — A licensed collection with Michael Payne, interior designer and host of HGTV's Designing for the Sexes

, is a classic contemporary look in moderate scale cherry and maple veneers with strong steel frames with powder-coat finishes. The collection also features custom contrasting 7-shaped pulls.

Southport Furniture

, IHFC-G474 — The company looks to broaden its appeal to Midwest customers, strengthen current position in coastal areas and address younger consumers with these lifestyle collections. Merlot Avenue is an 11-piece bedroom group with a fresh, uptown feel with deep merlot finish on poplar solids and veneers and made in Mexico. Spring Valley is a 19-piece vibrant lifestyle bedroom group available in eight colors or a natural maple finish crafted of maple solids and veneers, also made in Mexico. Ash Creek is a nine-piece antique country lodge bedroom in ash solids and oak veneers.

Thomasville Furniture

, HS 306 — Two new collections of bedroom, dinning, and occasional debut. Provencal, inspired by the warmth of Provence and the wine regions of the French countryside, has elegant bowed drawer fronts and intricate hand carved details. Miramar in contemporary ash solids and ash veneers has a more sophisticated cosmopolitan style.
