Held as part of Furnitex, three students from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) design course took out the Laminex Group Material Solutions award for their contribution to producing innovative furniture designs. Sally Thomas, Luke Ford and Albert Wangsawijaya produced a modular shoe display called ‘Moon shoes display’ using Athlon and stainless steel tubing.
The award was established by Laminex to encourage students to gain experience working with a variety of materials to produce innovative furniture design, from the initial brief through to the finished concept. The brief was to think creatively and develop storage solutions that address the needs of our changing environment.
The students worked in teams to produce their prototypes using a selection of materials and product provided by Laminex including Athlon Interior and Meteon Exterior compact laminate, Fusion Solid Colour and Fusion Custom Art.
The Laminex Group is extending its support to RMIT’s young designers by sponsoring the Hybrid Objects exhibition in Tokyo in October, a joint initiative in association with the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and RMIT’s Interior Design program. The event will be the first major international exhibition of Australian furniture and industrial design, that showcases Australia’s talented young designers.
