State-of-the-art technology is being used at the University of Newcastle in NSW to test the performance of a new type of composite slab designed for the Asian market.
Goran Simundic from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment says the university will conduct tests for Lysaght Technology’s product (Lysaght Technology is part of BlueScope Steel).
The slab is a system with steel formwork decking filled with concrete to create a composite slab which relies on the bond between the steel and concrete.
“Our rig will apply 5000 vibrating cycles over three to four hours to each composite slab to test the composite performance of the structural decking,” says Simundic. “These tests are important in measuring the strength of the structural decking which has been designed for the Asian market. It will be used for projects where vibrations or movement is important - structures such as large buildings, factories and multi-storey car parks.”
