The roof garden at the Cvjetni Shopping Centre

Atlantis Water Management completed a green roof project recently in Croatia, Europe for the Hoto Group employing Australian made green building technology.

Located in the central CBD area of the Croatian capital, Zagreb, the Cvjetni Shopping Centre has been designed to deliver an aesthetically beautiful building that also achieves sustainable and environmental benefits.

Key objectives of the roof garden project included reducing the heat island effect and stormwater runoff in addition to improving aesthetics.

Inventor and manufacturer of sustainable drainage solutions, Atlantis Water Management delivered the environmental design solution to the shopping centre complex using more than 2,000m² of 52mm drainage cells for the roof garden and related applications such as planter boxes and podium landscaping.

The drainage cells were used as an efficient subsurface horizontal water management media for the roof garden.

The drainage cells were installed on top of a 200mm waterproofed concrete slab. A layer of Edifloor Geotextile was then laid on the drainage cells followed by 50mm of sand and the planting soil media.

A major section of the roof garden is located in the central courtyard area, which has added massive value to the development, the surrounding commercial shopping centre and the exclusive residential apartments. The solution allowed the client to maximise all available space as well as provide a tremendously positive impact on the environment.
