Glass from Viridian New World Glass has been used in the redevelopment of the Austral Bowling Club in Sydney.
In the first stage of a four stage redevelopment of the bowling club, 2RKS Architecture used Viridian glass extensively around the gaming terrace and new spectator stand.
The L-shaped addition comprises a louvre wall spanning the terrace’s entire length. Viridian SuperBlue EVantage glazing of 6mm thickness was used extensively in the louvre wall and offers significant advantages in thermal requirements and energy performance.
As well as meeting environmental requirements for the building, the SuperBlue glazing also gave the building a dramatic look, creating a modern palette of cool blues and greys.
SuperBlue glazing was also used in a balustrade, but is significantly different to the louvre wall. A balustrade has to withstand horizontal impact, as required by the Australian building code, and using a 12mm thickness of the SuperBlue would have resulted in the balustrade looking too blue.
In the end 6mm of SuperBlue was laminated together with 6mm of clear glass, providing the thickness and rigidity needed, but allowing the glass to still be ultra-transparent. While the balustrade glazing looks identical to the louvre system, it has been constructed very differently.
