The latest trends in residential interior design have been revealed as Australia’s leading interior designers are short-listed for the coveted Residential Interior Design Award as part of the prestigious 2005 Interior Design Awards.
A partnership event of the Design Institute of Australia, the largest, most influential forum for the display of contemporary design, designEX and Artichoke Magazine, the annual Awards champion outstanding commercial and residential interior design by Australian designers and form one of the most important and professionally respected nights in the industry’s calendar.
The short list for the Residential Interior Design Category (sponsored by ), was compiled from 57 entries from throughout Australia, covering a wide range of residences from homes overlooking the Sydney Harbour, to converted sugar refineries and churches, to apartments set in the mountains. Of the short list of 20 entrants, Victoria has the greatest percentage, with a representation of 11 projects, followed by New South Wales with six projects, and South Australia and Queensland both with one.
From the short list, Finalists, a Best of State Winner, an overall Residential Interior Design Winner, and an overall Interior Design Excellence & Innovation Winner (chosen from the winners of each primary category) will be announced at the Interior Design Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday, 22 April 2005 in the Great Hall, National Gallery of Victoria. (The event coincides with designEX, Form and Function, and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects National Conference being held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre from 21-23 April 2005).
Those responsible for the announcements are from a judging panel comprised of Australia’s most renowned commercial/residential interior designers and architects: Peter Geyer (Geyer, VIC); Andrew Parr (SJB Interiors, VIC); Ruth Levine (rldesign, NSW); and Kirsti Simpson (Hassell, QLD).
According to judge Peter Geyer of Geyer, the calibre of entrants in the Residential Interior Design Category was extremely high this year.
“We are seeing some fantastic residential interior design coming out of Australia. There are some definite recurring themes around clean, modern interiors which are fantastic but it is also great to see some exemplary solutions which break this mould,” he says.
In addition to the Residential Interior Design category, awards will be given for another nine categories, which include:
1. Retail Interior Design
2. Hospitality Interior Design
3. Corporate Interior Design
4. Public/Institutional Interior Design
5. Colour in Commercial Interior Design (sponsored by Dulux Duspec)

7. Environmentally Sustainable Design (sponsored by Somfy)
