Worldwide Refinishing Systems (Aust) offer bath resurfacing solutions. Resurfacing a bath in-situ without removal will restore the surfaces to showroom appearance without incurring any of the costs associated with removal and replacement.
A worn or damaged bath cannot be replaced without disturbing tiled surrounds during removal and adjustment to the plumbing connections. It can also be difficult to replace with a bath of identical size and shape, resulting in more work to replace the tiled bath surrounds and sometimes the adjoining floor.
The original tiles may also be difficult to match, so the project either ends up on hold or morphs into a full bathroom renovation. Bath resurfacing, sometimes referred to as bath refinishing, bath re-glazing or bath re-enamelling, restores the bath surface to showroom condition without removal, thereby saving up to 75% of the cost replacement.
Professional resurfacing relies on correct surface preparation, proprietary coating technology and a specialised delivery system to produce results that can also withstand hot water and repeated cleaning over many years.
The full bath resurfacing process includes cleaning followed by etching, repairing, masking, priming, top coating and curing. If any one of these stages is missed or incorrectly completed, then there is the potential for failure through loss of adhesion, patchy dry film thickness and low wear resistance.
For surface preparation and priming there is the choice of traditional etch and catalysed bond coat systems or the simpler adhesor system. The quality and extent of room masking prior to spray application is another point of difference when selecting a particular bath resurfacing system.
The top coat system is applied using either an HVLP turbine system or conventional pressure pot system. For best results a remote pressure cup system will deliver uniform thickness (and therefore scrub life) to all surfaces regardless of fixture shape and location.
When fully cured, the new surface will withstand hot water and any non-abrasive household cleaners. The scrub life of a professionally applied proprietary bath resurfacing system is generally 10 years or more. Bath resurfacing provides both convenience and significant cost saving of up to 75% compared with replacement.
The cost will depend on factors including:
- The quality of resurfacing system
- The time spent prepping, masking and applying the system
- The extent of repairs
- The finished film thickness provided
- The location of the job
Once resurfaced, a bath can be easily resurfaced in future years at change of ownership or whenever a colour change is needed.
