Building green is becoming a reality. Many people are realising the benefits of creating sustainable buildings suited to the climate and landscape in their region of Australia.
Most green buildings in Australia are private residences; there are few green public or commercial buildings.
However, the new 60L Green Building in Melbourne, a four level office and retail space developed by the Green Building Partnership, is setting high, but achievable standards for other commercial buildings to follow.
The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) contributed to the environmental management in the development and implementation of the 60L Green Building’s environmental objectives and is now one of the principal tenants in the greenest, commercially viable, office building in Australia.
ACF’s Green Office was designed by H2O architects to enable ACF to practice what it advocates - a sustainable future.
When deciding on furniture and material fittings for their green office, ACF considered various approaches to minimising the ecological footprint of the fitout including:
- The sourcing of items that had an improved environmental performance over standard products
- The reuse of existing furniture and materials
- The refurbishment of items
