According to heritage restoration product suppliers, Westox , pressure injection chemical damp-proof courses are the only cost effective method to treat rising damp.
Pressure injection chemical damp-proof courses were originally introduced into Australia by Westox, manufacturers and suppliers of heritage restoration products. Westox’s products have been used to restore some of Australia’s oldest buildings.
“Our method works by injecting a siloxane fluid through drilled holes into the lower course of brickwork. This forms a barrier against moisture, preventing it from moving further up the masonry and damaging the wall. It is the most logical way to guard against further damage,” said Westox’s Managing Director, Barrie Cooper.
“Rising damp and salt contamination is a significant cause of deterioration in heritage buildings. Rising damp refers to a process where moisture-carrying salt is drawn into the walls of a building.
“Effects of rising damp can include drummy render and bubbly peeling paint. If let untreated rising damp could cause the skirting boards to rot and cause masonry to weaken and could eventually affect the stability of the building.
“The advantages of this injection system are it is faster, cleaner and the level of injection/installation is low enough to provide protection to the skirting boards and can avoid dampness bridging through the new plaster,” added Barrie Cooper.
The list of Westox’s restoration projects is long and Westox’s chemical damp-proof courses have been used on some notable Australian buildings including Toxana House in Richmond (c 1841), Bendigo Town Hall (c 1857), Bronte House in Sydney (c 1860) and the Old Government House in Parramatta (c 1799) to name a few.
Westox also manufacture heritage restoration salt decontamination product, Cocoon. It is the product and process of drawing the salt out masonry that has deteriorated greatly from salt contamination.
