Glass of its own

Australian owned glass laminator, Viridian  (formerly Pilkington and DMS Glass), has recently won the Solutia 2002 Worldwide Design Award for the Best Usage of Laminated Glass in the Sports and Recreational Facilities category for its part in creating the Flemington Racecourse Grandstand, Melbourne. Out of five category awards, DMS Glass was the only winner in the Australian and Asian region.

DMS Glass designed, manufactured and installed toughened-laminated glass for the project in expansive vertical and overhead areas.

Entries were judged on design significance of new and developing applications of laminated glass; the degree of attention paid to the benefits of laminated glass; the creative use of laminated glass and the overall aesthetic appeal of the project.

The new Grandstand, designed by the Buchan Group, is the epitome of modernism in architecture. It received the 2001 Architecture Award, Commercial Category, from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, Victorian Chapter, and was also awarded the 2001 Excellence in Construction Award from the Master Builders Association of Victoria.

DMS Envirolam® toughened-laminated glass was used with one of Solutia’s Saflex products, in order to withstand both negative and positive high wind pressures and any water penetration.

Extensive glass usage on the seemingly transparent building allows it to function as a year-round, multi-use entertainment and function venue, setting it apart from other grandstands around the world. The impressive glazed trackside façade of five levels provides 5,100 seats behind glass, allowing vast unimpeded panoramic views.

Achieving the requirements of the architectural brief was challenging and complex, employing technologies never previously used in Australia, with DMS Glass designing, manufacturing, testing and installing the glass.

The manufacturing challenge for the glass was to first toughen and then laminate the two components together in a distortion-free manner that wouldn’t cause any visual distress to the glass, in order to achieve the required unhindered viewing.
