Recent changes to the Building Code of Australia highlight the need to utilise energy efficient building materials in all new homes. Building materials in many categories are now energy-rated, including windows and skylights and consideration must be given to the amount of glazing, natural ventilation and insulation for a home to be approved.
The full range of Velux skylights have been rated under the Skylight Energy Rating Scheme which has been developed to test the thermal performance of skylight products, receiving either four and a half or five stars. The SERS system works in much the same way as the whitegoods star rating, however with skylights there are three bands of stars. Stars are given for the skylight’s performance in winter, performance in summer and stars for the amount of ‘cool daylight’ that the skylight provides.
