Paving the wine way
While the South Australian wine district of McLaren Vale retained its village character, its commercial streetscape was deteriorating, with uneven bitumen footpaths lined with Stobie poles according to the Clay Brick and Paver Association.
The local trader’s association master-planned a streetscape redevelopment program that was adopted by the City of Onkaparinga, with the Electricity Trust of South Australia funding most of the cost of undergrounding power cables, conditional upon the council beautifying thestreetscape.
The city chose clay pavers because they have better finish and look than concrete pavers according to landscape designer, Phil Boulden.
Substantial crossfalls made disabled access a challenge. The solution was to ‘terrace’ the footpaths, defining level sections with parallel rows of red pavers. Crossovers are differentiated from footpaths in colour and pattern, assisting visually impaired people.
