Slimline water tanks – installation guideleines

Properly installed & maintained, your Supatank water tank will provide you with many years of service.

Different local councils can have specific requirements for the installation of new water tanks. For example, there may be rules concerning boundary lines or planning zones; and restrictions concerning who may install water tanks. Supatank recommends that installers consult the local council or water authority before installation.

Supatank tanks are designed to be installed under the roof eave, outside the external wall of the home. The tank will be required to hold a substantial amount of water – from 1.1 tonne to 5 tonne - so it is important that the water tank is installed on a level base. The ground must be stable and the tank needs to be placed on a reinforced (1762 reo mesh) concrete slab.

It is recommended that all water tanks are installed by a qualified licensed plumber. The plumber will conduct all work to install pipe work from the root gutter, installing a 'First Flush' and/or,Rainhead' device (if specified), all over flow pipe work and connection of taps, pumps or other outlets as required.

Supatank Water tanks come complete with:

  • Three (3) 25mm BSP brass female outlets (supplied fitted)
  • One (1) 400mm diameter Leaf & Insect strainer (supplied fitted with stainless steel screws)
The 25mm BSP brass female outlets are moulded into the wall of the tank. The installer must drill out the wall inside the outlets to allow for the water flow. For optimal water flow, a 22mm hole is recommended.

When fitting a tap or gate valve use a good quality thread tape to ensure a good thread seal, be careful not to cross thread or over tighten the tap or gate valve as this may cause damage to the brass outlet. Using an 89mm holesaw, drill an 89mm hole through the vertical face of the tank to install the overflow screen. Water overflow will be directed through this hole and back into the stormwater system. Once the hole is drilled carefully fit the 90mm stormwater overflow pipe into the tank. It is a good idea to secure the pipe with a silicone seal it to make it watertight.

To act is a physical air break before draining into a ‘Tun dish' attached to the stormwater system, it is recommended that a 'flap valve' be fitted (screwed & silicone sealed) to the overflow pipe.

NB: The NSW dept of Health recommends that tanks be desludged every two-three years.
