Skydome skylights
Skydome skylights

About 500 new homes in Newington, formerly known as the Olympic Village in Sydney, were kitted out with Skydome skylights as part of a 12-year Mirvac Lend Lease Village Consortium project.

The project, completed in March this year, started in 1997 in collaboration with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority and included the development of over 1,800 residences in Newington, NSW. The aim of the project was to provide accommodation for the Olympic athletes at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games as well as create an integrated housing development and new suburb for Sydney.

Warren Walters, site manager for the project, said skylights were included in the design concept of about 500 homes to bring natural light to bathrooms with no windows.

“We chose to install Skydome skylights to help bring the light in and improve overall light levels. An added benefit of skylights is that they also help save energy because householders don’t need artificial lighting throughout the day,” Walters explained.

Skydome skylights, officially recognised as Australian Owned and Made, are manufactured by Skydome, a supplier and manufacturer of skylight and ventilation products.

“Skydome supplied us with high quality products and experienced and efficient tradesmen who both built the lightwells and installed the skylights. So the whole process was easy,” Walters said.

Skydome, located in Five Dock, was established in 1976 by Michael Bonello who saw the potential of skylights for Australian buildings. The company’s products have since been used in numerous high-profile buildings including those at Olympic Park.

“We installed skylights at the Olympic Aquatic Centre and Olympic Rail Station and also completed the glazing of the Olympic Stadium including the roof and corporate boxes,” Bonello said.

The original Skydome skylights which were installed in the Newington homes are available in a wide range of sizes and models to suit all building applications and roofs. They come in square and rectangular variations as well as circular and pyramid shapes.

All Skydome skylights are glazed to protect from harmful UV rays with 99 per cent UV blockout, available in opal, clear and tint glazing.

Skydome skylights are entirely weather-proof and robust and are manufactured from quality raw materials sourced within Australia.

Accessories for Skydome skylights include heat control blinds, decorative diffusers, security grilles and mechanical ventilation.

Skydome currently offers three types of skylights each with unique features and applications: Skydome, Skytube and Skywindow.
