Reed Construction Data (formerly Cordell) reports that following what appeared to be a correction in new project numbers in August, a secondary surge this month was documented on the back of Round 3 announcements of the BER.
In numerical terms the most variable sector for new prospects this year is undoubtedly Community projects. During September 2009 at a total of 2,707 cases, this sector represented 67.1% of all new projects reported for the month. BER projects specifically accounted for 62.3% of the all sector total of 4,033 cases in September. The impact of this second tier elevation on new project numbers nationally is cleanly illustrated by current levels exceeding this month last year by 240.3%. It should also be noted that beyond this atypical activity, all other sectors (excepting Commercial) have documented new project numbers in excess of this period last year.
A majority of this activity was reported between NSW (1,151 cases) and VIC (1,085 cases), at proportional shares in the order of 28.5% and 26.9% respectively. These states also saw the largest distribution increases since this period last year. Such majority was followed by the smart state QLD, at 744 new projects in September 2009, having seen an additional 510 new projects over the September 2008 reporting.
The only other state to report a double digit share this month was WA, at 576 cases in September or 14.3% of the all states total.
