When planning began in 1997 for the future development of the Dubai International Airport, projected passenger numbers of 9m were forecast to be reached over the next decade.
Within seven years this figure had more than doubled to reach 21m by 2004 and is now expected to reach 60m by 2010.
The expansion program is catering for 70 million and aims to make Dubai the world’s premier gateway for the Airbus A380. Dubai’s status as the region’s major transit hub could see 100 airlines flying to 160 destinations worldwide.
The US$4bn second phase expansion program includes the construction of Terminal 3 and concourses 2 and 3, plus the upgrade of existing terminal 2. All scheduled for completion next year.
Emirate Airlines has 47 of the new A380 Aircraft on order with the first due for delivery in 2007, Concourse 2 will have gates configured for this aircraft and a further 18 in Concourse 3. Oversize seating areas and double deck Airbridges will handle the 500+ passenger numbers per flight.
Concourse 2 is in advanced stages of construction and planning is well advanced for construction on Terminal and concourse 3.
