Building with pine

Homebuilders are being targeted in a new public education campaign called ‘Plantation pine - a better living environment’ that highlights the eco-benefits of building with plantation pine.

The campaign draws on research that is said to show that plantation pine to build the average four bedroom home resulted in up to 85 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than steel and other structural materials.

Chairman of the Timber Development Association and spokesman for the Plantation Pine Framing Alliance, John Simon, says the campaign would debunk several myths surrounding the use of pine in building. “More than 90 percent of homes are now built with pine because it is easy to work with, cost-effective and readily available,” says Simon. “But there is a new dimension to the market now, in that consumers want to use materials that are eco-friendly. Plantation pine is therefore a clear standout as the building product of the future..”

According to Simon the plantation pine sector is a progressive one, which would continue to tailor building products to suit the needs of builders and homeowners.
