The construction of Phillip Island’s first surf beach access for visitors of all abilities has begun with the final load of NatureWood ACQ treated timber from Osmose Australia leaving for Smith’s Beach from Davids Timber in Melbourne.
The community project, first mooted in 2001, consists of a 107m long switchback ramp from the car park viewing area to the beach. The estimated $65,000 construction costs were almost halved following a donation of timber treated with NatureWood ACQ from Davids Timber and the provision of labour by 36 third and fourth year apprentices from Homesglen TAFE.
“All timber used in the project is treated with NatureWood ACQ, an alternative to traditional pressure treatments for pine, and one of the most durable treatments available for outside conditions,” says Maurice Effron from Davids Timber. “The ramp will be the largest outdoor structure yet to be built with ACQ treated timber in Victoria.
“The ramp project has taken two and a half years to fund and will take only weeks to build. It will provide long-term access to a safe and beautiful family beach for people of all abilities, including those with permanent and temporary disabilities, frail or aged people, the sight impaired and parents with prams.”
