When designing and building this new home it was essential that it be conducive to the lifestyle of a professional couple and their three active children.
The property was designed in an L-shape to take advantage of the northerly aspect and to create light-filled living spaces.
The clients specifically wanted a single-storey home with informal entertaining areas opening to an in-ground pool area at the rear of the property.
All of the home's living areas, as well as the master bedroom, had to relate well to the outdoor areas and there needed to be an abundance of covered verandahs extending from all living areas.
As the block was deep but quite narrow, with adjoining properties on either side, the overall design needed to be directed to create a shielded environment for the outdoor entertaining areas.
It was also important that at the same time, the outside design allowed for a separate childs’s play area that did not interrupt the home's mainstream entertaining arena.
The block's narrow footage meant it was important that the house be given a sense of entry and this was created by the use of a Moorish influence facade which, when combined with a striking, well proportioned formal entry, created a welcoming entry.
The proportions of the block dictated that the home would have to be long and fairly narrow and as such it was essential that the double garage at the front be as understated as possible and provide direct internal access to the inside.
To maximise the use of the site, the design followed the contours that fell to the street, which effectively allowed the introduction of split-levels while maintaining the same ceiling height. This unique design idea helped give the illusion of extra proportions and created a sense of light and space.
A sense of intimacy and warmth was created in the formal living areas by the use of open fireplaces which, along with two columns at the entry to the dining room, were used to add atmosphere and a sense of occasion without having to isolate these formal areas from the rest of the house.
An abundance of glass and window walling was used in the living areas to maximise the view of the pool and to create a resort-like ambience, while a large island unit was included to create a conversation and interaction area in the heart of the family's living space.
Attention was also attributed to the positioning of the home's bedrooms in order to achieve a good separation between parents and children’s areas. An additional guest suite, with its own ensuite and separate external entry, allows visitors a sense of independance.
The key to this home's success was the simple and uncomplicated design principles that were adhered to at all times. The overall design was masterminded to make maximum use of the property while dealing realistically with its restrictions.
Living and entertaining areas are the dominant feature and work well to create a relaxed family home environment that is perfect for both easy living and entertaining.
Owing to her husbands work committments, the wife had to take over the project. The support guidance provided by Oppidan Homes to the owner throughout the project was paramount in its successful outcome - turning a vision into reality.
