Designed by Launceston-based Birrelli Architects, the Australian Technical College is a unique, twenty-first century trade and secondary teaching facility, promoting excellence in teaching for vocational and life-long learning.
The design features a portal-framed, elongated, utilitarian building, which references the traditional industrial forms of the Inveresk railyard structures. It combines a simple structural system, clearly expressed portal frames, with an economy of means and an honest expression. The award-winning design incorporates a bold, daring, and inspiring palette of materials and tones, intended to add colour to the heritage precinct.
The Kromaplus range from Ontera Modular Carpets was selected primarily for its ability to link with the rhythm of the northern facade and the bespoke acoustic ceiling panels. The product was used extensively throughout on the walls and served two functional purposes in addition to the visual impact; an acoustic treatment as well as providing an area for pin boarding.
