A web site that will enable NSW consumers to check a builder’s licence and track record on line has been launched by the NSW Department of Fair Trading .

Part of a bundle of initiatives undertaken following the parliamentary inquiry into home building in NSW, the web site will contain information for both homeowners and builders. The latter will be able to register on the site to receive regular information updates from the newly established Office of Home Building, set up to inform, regulate, mediate and investigate the NSW home building industry.

Other initiatives include the appointment of 26 building inspectors who will help resolve disputes on site thus avoiding long and costly conflicts between builders and consumers; the trialling of an advice and advocacy centre where consumers can seek independent information about building issues; the requirement for home warranty insurers to provide builders with an efficient and easily understood assessment process; the introduction of mandatory continuing education for builders and contractors and the setting of a standard ratio of qualified supervisors to each building project.

The web site address is www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/building.
