Lighting at a recent project by award-winning designer, Trevor Reitsma

M-Elec Pty Ltd  recently discussed the finer aspects of lighting design with award-winning designer, Trevor Reitsma (Directors, Reitsma and Associates) from the Sunshine Coast.

On integrating natural light with artificial light
Trevor believes that the orientation of the building is important since natural light needs to be factored into the design of a project to ensure it appropriately filters through the home during the day creating a positive atmosphere. Equally important is artificial light at dusk for creating the desired environment.

On the output colour of the lights, Trevor said that it really depended on the mood and look that the client was trying to achieve. To achieve the desired outcome the light output must match the function and design.

Lighting in ten years
Trevor comments that use of LED lights is just beginning, but he also believes that the chip will become much smaller and that things that cannot be illuminated now will be done in the future. For instance, night time would allow the home to be viewed in a new light.

He explains that by employing suitable lighting products/layouts, artificial lighting will enable the building or home to take on an entirely new character, even compensating for a poorly orientated building.

Trevor’s favourite lighting products
As a fan of industrial design, Trevor is impressed by more discreet or simplistic light fittings rather than products that stand out.

Encouraging the use of LED lights
Trevor encourages his clients to use LED lighting products, explaining that the price for the futuristic technology has decreased significantly making it far more accessible.

On favourite projects
Trevor lists his O-house project as a recent favourite as it embraces natural light regardless of the orientation. The entrance of the house opens into the central courtyard, and the correct selection and positioning of artificial lights continues the feel of daylight even when it is gone.

Key design elements incorporated into work
Trevor tries to avoid any overly showy or superficial aspect in his work, focusing on keeping the design simplistic and subtle.

Mistakes easily made in lighting projects
According to Trevor, being very conservative and simply repeating standard practices in lighting placement such as fitting four downlights in a room in a square pattern can defeat the purpose. He recommends concealed lights or using reflected light off walls and/or ceilings to make an impact.

Favourite product in M-Elec’s range of LED lights
Trevor chooses the A1590 for its architectural looks as well an industrial design edge, having recently used it in his own studio unit, refurb. Another favourite is the WING light (to be released in January 2012), where bounced light is used effectively.
