Melbourne’s CBD is set to be transformed by the construction of a $200 million development by RMIT.
The Swanston building, which will be the centrepiece of the university’s $500 million capital works program, will result in a 10-storey, 34,350 square metre academic building on Swanston Street. Construction is scheduled to begin in August after demolition of existing site structures has been completed, and it is estimated that 800 construction jobs will be created.
Architects are also benefitting from extra work. Lyons Architects have been working on plans for the development for the last 12 months, with between 10 and 15 architects working on the project at any one time.
Director of Lyons Architects, Adrian Stanic, said that this team would expand as they entered the design development phase.
