Young designer boxes clever to win design award
Twenty-year old Scott Crouch of Murray Bridge has been declared winner of the inaugural La Salle Furniture Design Award for his design, Boxy Box Box.
A graduate of the Diploma of Arts (Furniture Design) Course at Marleston TAFE, Scott worked on the design as part of his final year project and entered it for the La Salle Design Award.
The La Salle Design Award is the result of a collaboration between TAFE SA and South Australian commercial furniture manufacturer, La Salle Furniture and supports emerging South Australian furniture designers.
Ten students entered for the award with the criteria for entry being that the furniture had to be functional, innovative, ergonomic and commercially applicable.
The Boxy Box Box is a stackable storage system, consisting of 12 boxes which can be interlocked to form a variety of shapes.
Suitable for the home or office, the versatility of the product means that it can be used as anything from a bookshelf, room divider or TV cabinet.
Receiving the award, winning designer, Scott Crouch said, “I wanted to create a piece of furniture that doesn’t remain stagnant. The Boxy Box Box is an interactive piece that consumers can adapt to suit their lifestyle and changing environment.”
Each piece in the Boxy Box Box is made from a timber frame, with mdf dove-tail joints which enable them to connect together. Ten of the boxes are white, while two are orange and all feature bamboo backing.
Scott’s prize for winning the La Salle Award was $1,290, which covered his final year’s tuition fee for his Diploma of Arts (Furniture Design) course.
General Manager of La Salle Furniture, Dean Witham, who was one of the judges of the competition said, “We chose Scott’s design because of its simplicity and potential as a commercially viable product.
“It was clear from his design that he had thought carefully about the award criteria and how best to apply simple yet effective design principles.
“Overall we were very impressed by the quality of entries submitted by the students. It is exciting to see the talent of Adelaide’s future furniture designers.”
Other judges included respected South Australian furniture designer Khai Liew and Interior Designer Carmel Sicilano.
Other entries included a lighting unit, seating, entertainment unit and even a cleaning trolley.
The Boxy Box Box and other entries in the competition were featured in a unique exhibition of furniture designed by graduates of the Diploma of Arts (Furniture Design) Course.
The exhibition was hosted at Keen Office Furniture, Keswick.
La Salle Furniture and Keen Office Furniture are both of CMV Commercial, a division of the CMV Group.
