Kobelco has set up a new $220 million purpose-built manufacturing facility in Hiroshima, Japan. The new Itsukaichi plant replaces two of Kobelco’s original manufacturing facilities at the Gion factory and the Numata factory.

Kobelco Australia Brand Leader, Doug McQuinn explained that the new manufacturing facility was set up as the company had outgrown its existing facilities, which had limitations in terms of location, access and productivity.

The new manufacturing plant will ensure that Australian customers have faster access to products than before. The new Itsukaichi facility will include an extensive training centre and also house Kobelco’s research and development team. The factory covers 35,000m² of the facility’s 10-hectare site.

According to Doug, members of Kobelco’s Australian team will be travelling to the new factory soon to undertake service, support and technical training that they can pass on to the local dealers. They will also have an opportunity to view new product developments at the plant.

Kobelco’s new Itsukaichi facility is purpose-built for manufacturing Kobelco’s state-of-the-art excavators. Staff welfare has been kept in mind with the provision of excellent facilities for the workers including a 600-person dining room with restaurant-quality food and tennis courts for recreation.

The consolidation of the two existing plants and a significant increase in production capacity are some of the benefits of the new facility, leading to better productivity and economies of scale. Additionally, the new facility will allow changes to be made easily on the production line as the products continue to evolve.

While the Itsukaichi factory will manufacture all of Kobelco’s heavy excavators, the Numata factory will continue to manufacture components for new Kobelco excavators, eliminating the need for Kobelco to rely on external suppliers. Kobelco will now be able to manage the entire supply chain and production to ensure high quality machines and components.

Kobelco excavators are available in Australia through Kobelco-CNH Australia , which operates dealerships in 13 locations around the country in every state and territory. Kobelco offers a full range of compact, mid-size and heavy excavators up to 85 tonnes as well as dismantling, demolition and scrap handling machines up to 35 tonnes.
