buildingSmart International Alliance for Interoperability
buildingSmart International Alliance for Interoperability
buildingSmart was established in 2005 as next phase of development for construction industry process improvements through improved collaboration tools.

These technologies have been developed by the International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI) and the related Standard for Exchange of Product
(STEP) program that has been ongoing for 20 years.

The goals of the buildingSmart initiative is to produce much better buildings that:
  • the community values
  • meet real needs
  • perform better
  • impact the environments less
  • take less time and money to build and to use
buildingSmart promote technologies and processes that promise better outcomes. The organisation drives industry uptake of these technologies, providing promotion, implementation and training programs.

Members of the buildingSmart IAI consist of:
  • building owners and developers
  • architects
  • engineers
  • related design, planning and authority professionals
  • builders
  • sub-contractors
  • product and materials suppliers
  • related service providers
buildingSmart defines, publishes and promotes Industry Foundation Classes (IFCs) which form the common language of a new interoperable infrastructure. This is a basis for sharing information throughout the building and construction project life cycle, across disciplines and technical applications.
