Dozens of inner-city children are contributing ideas for their dream playground to help the City of Sydney redesign the ageing play area at Fitzroy Gardens in Kings Cross.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP explained that the Fitzroy Gardens playground was a vital outdoor play space for children in Kings Cross, Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay, making it important for the design to incorporate the ideas of local youngsters.

Top of the junior designers’ wish lists are climbing structures, hanging walkways and water features.

The new playground will provide a wide range of engaging activities for children of all age groups, and will specifically meet the needs of inner-city youngsters who do not have access to such open spaces.

The City of Sydney staff has consulted with Darlinghurst Public School kindergarten students, members of the Junior Jivers dance group, as well as dozens of parents and residents on the playground design.

Turf Design Studio has used the results of the consultation as well as the kindergarten students’ colourful design illustrations to develop an initial concept for the playground, which is now on public exhibition.

Built in the 1990s, the present playground currently needs a larger play space with better-quality equipment, more seating for parents and carers, as well as a new floor surface and shade cover.

Surveys found the majority of playground users were from the local area with 85% living less than 1km away. The concept plans will also include details on the impact, if any of a larger playground on the heritage value of Fitzroy Gardens, as well as the merits of the garden being listed as a heritage item.

The concept plans will be on public exhibition until 17 August.
