Hospitals need not look boring or clinical. In fact, staff at Mater Children’s Hospital believe that a hospital should look warm and inviting, so every patient who sets foot in the facility feels comfortable and at ease.
In addition to creating a good-looking environment, the design serves a functional purpose.
Designed to be a single efficient unit, the new look would give the hospital a distinctively more integrated appearance.
To the team from Phillips Smith Conwell Architects and Bickerton Masters Architecture, bold blocks of colours and cheerful patterns were the suitable solution to create a family-friendly ambience.
The customised carpet they chose features a sprightly combination of spiral and star motifs, injecting a good sense of light-hearted fun that is not commonly associated with hospitals.
Set against a palette of bright colours used in the other interior elements, the new look injects freshness and life into the environment.
Andrew Holmes, Senior Designer in charge of the project explained that it was also important for the carpet to be made with Invista’s Antron Legacy nylon.
With its high standards for soil resistance and colour retention over long periods of time, Invista’s Antron Legacy nylon fibre is a suitable choice for carpets.
“Although the development of the pattern was important, it was also necessary to ensure that we chose a product that would stand up to the constant traffic, as well as allow bed and trolley movement to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety requirements.”
Impressed with the overall result of the new design and the high quality of the product, the staff of the Mater Children’s Hospital is an extremely pleased client.
