Steel shows the way
National welfare provider the Wesley Mission has combined with the Housing Industry Association in a campaign to improve water and energy efficiency in residences around Australia. The two organisations are using the GreenSmart display village program to promote environmentally-sustainable housing design.
The HIA has opened GreenSmart villages in many states including NSW where it is working with Sydney Water at the Kellyville GreenSmart village to boost water conservation. The village consists of four, five star energy efficient homes that will eventually be auctioned with the proceeds going to the Wesley Mission.
The display village incorporates a rectangular 1530L tank and a 1500L corrugated slimline tank made from Aquaplate polymer-coated steel, specially developed to provide reliable drinking water. Tanks made from Aquaplate steel feature a food-grade polymer lining hot bonded to a traditional galvanised steel sheet and are the only steel tanks to comply with the tough Australian Standard on the use of plastic materials for food contact use (AS2070, part 2).
Tony Robinson from Sydney Water says water conservation fits in with the overall theme of the GreenSmart homes. “Through the use of rain water tanks and by improving the soil’s ability to hold water, storm water run-off can be retained on site for later use,” he says. “The tanks have two main purposes - one to collect water for garden needs, while the other is connected to the hot water system, so the shower is run entirely on rain water.”
Tanks made from Aquaplate steel are crack and UV-resistant, rodent-proof, odour free and offer longer life and a better finished product than the alternatives.
