Printmaking technique from Hibiscus Art

Hibiscus Art  offers original etchings and lincut prints that are inspired by the bold images of South Pacific shells, flowers and designs. Hibiscus Art was founded by Susan Haywood-Smith. Her art style has been greatly influenced by the Polynesian cultures of the South Pacific. The prints offered by Hibiscus Art consists of ‘The Challenge Begins’, ‘The Promise of Peace’, ‘Rangatiratanga’, ‘Interwoven Destiny’, ‘A Fragile Peace’, ‘Fire of Life’, ‘The Pathway Home’, ‘Sanctuary Within’, ‘Sunset Over Paradise’, ‘Pacific Autumn’ and so on.

The prints from Hibiscus Art combine different print making techniques in one image. The techniques consist of Relief Printmaking, Intaglio Printmaking, Screen-printing and Chin Collé. The print work is done on linoleum. The linoleum surface is then inked up with a roller and printed on to paper by hand or by using a printmaking press. The image is transferred on to the paper and becomes reversed. The linoleum that has been carved appears as white on to the paper as this area is below the surface of the linoleum and has not picked up ink. Several blocks can be used to add different colours. Each block is printed separately.

Photopolymer intaglio is a safer form of traditional intaglio known as etching. Photopolymer plates are fairly new to printmaking and allow an accurate reproduction of a photographic image. It is a versatile technique that allows printmakers infinite possibilities unconstrained by the medium. Chic Collé refers to the application of a second layer over the top of the original image.
