What are VOCs?

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. They include a variety of chemicals that may have short term and long term adverse health effects. VOC’s are reported to be in higher concentrations (up to ten times higher) indoors than outdoors. This large amounts of indoor VOC’s now effect many offices by causing Sick Building Syndrome.

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is used to describe the situation in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to the amount of time spent in a building. No particular illness can be diagnosed but repeated symptoms occur and only dissipate when time is spent out of the building.

Sources of VOC's

There are thousands of products that emit VOC’s, many are human made chemicals that are used and produced in the manufacture of paints, pharmaceuticals and refrigerants. Other common products that produce VOCs include printing inks, glues, dry cleaning solvents, petroleum fuels and crude oil tanking.

Environmental Effects

The environmental effects of VOCs depend on the composition of the VOCs in question. While some are beneficial to the upper atmosphere by producing greenhouse gases that in turn create the ozone that protects us from UV rays. There are many that form in the lower atmosphere which can then create the effect of smog, thus causing respiratory problems for humans. In liquid forms VOCs can impact our water ways and soil.

Contributions to Indoor Air Pollution

The effects of Sick building syndrome are often felt when the indoor air quality is seriously diminished due to high amounts of VOC’s. The VOC’s can be released from many household products when they are in use, or to some extent when they are stored. Common household products can include paint, cleaning products, disinfectants, cosmetics,. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found concentrations of VOC’s in indoor air to be 2 to 5 times greater than in outdoor air. During certain activities indoor levels of VOC’s may reach 1,000 times that of the outside air.
