Tactile indicators are required by law to be fitted to all new stairway constructions. Small coin shape indicators provide a warning to the vision impaired that a change in surface level is imminent. Tactile indicators must be located at the bottom and top of stairways and ramps.
Floorsafe International has now released a new rubber tactile mat. Manufactured to meet Australian Standards, Tacpad 72 is a silicone rubber pad measuring 300mm x 600mm. Tacpad 72 is available in black, yellow and grey.
316 stainless steel tactile indicators are also available in flat coin shape for use on ceramic tiles and other hard floor surfaces. Tactiles for installation on carpet, concrete and other porous surfaces are installed using a stem type stainless steel or plastic tactile indicator, which is drilled and fixed to the surface.
