The best fire protection is of little use if the fixing elements are not fire tested and approved. The strength and useful life of many building components depends to a large extent on the quality of the fixing elements. Anchors and plugs play a particularly important role in passive fire protection, for instance to keep escape routes clear of falling down building elements.
The properties of plugs and anchors are specified and stipulated in a number of laws, regulations and special approvals. Depending on type and use of the anchor or plug, the approvals or fire test certificates show the appropriate values for loads and the duration of fire exposure.
Heavy duty anchors under DIN 4102
Among other elements, Fischer has tested the following heavy duty anchors in terms of their fire behaviour under DIN 4102: the high performance anchor FH II, the anchor bolt FAZ II, FAZ A4/C, the bolt FBN, Zykon Anchor FZA, Zykon hammerset anchor FZEA II, hollow ceiling anchors FHY, the injection system FIS V and the EXA Express Anchor.
The load bearing capacity of these fixings depends on the duration of fire resistance, the anchor diameter and the steel grade. In general, stainless steel grades provide more safety in the event of fire than carbon-type steel grades. For steel failure and without the need for tests involving stainless steel anchors, the classification of identical anchors and plugs also apply for carbon-type steel anchors. The results are therefore well on the safe side.
