Firewood Association of Australia (FAA)
Firewood Association of Australia (FAA)
Established in October 2005, the Firewood Association of Australia  (FAA) is an industry representative body of the Australian commercial firewood supply industry.

The need for a whole of industry representative body was highlighted during the development of the government's Voluntary Code of Practice for Firewood Suppliers. The Code of Practice was later accepted by the Natural Resources Management Ministerial Council.

Currently, the FAA is the only organisation that is working effectively to protect and grow the firewood industry.

What is considered sustainable firewood?
According to the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council's Firewood Taskforce, environmentally sustainable firewood must tick the following criteria:
  1. Logging residues from sustainably managed forests and plantations.
  2. Residue or by-product from sawmilling or other wood processing operations supplied by sustainably managed forests and plantations.
  3. Wood collected from forest or woodland under government authorisation.
  4. Wood collected on private property under formal management plans or environmental guidelines.
  5. Wood from agroforestry, planted shelterbelts, planted windbreaks or waste timber.
  6. Salvage of waste timber from approved harvesting on private or public land.
  7. Recycled or waste timber from tree lopping, building demolition or urban salvage.
According to the Association, Jarrah, Wandoo, Brown Peppermint, River Red Gum, Ironbark and Box are considered the best firewood.
