Queensland electricians on strike

Queensland electricians at six construction sites across Brisbane will go on strike today.

The 24-hour strike to start from 10am (AEST) is part of an Electrical Trades Union (ETU) campaign for better wages and conditions.

Members today also voted to extend industrial action to two more construction sites in Brisbane including a residential development at New Farm and the Roma Street Magistrates Court.

The electricians are refusing to work any overtime or complete temporary power and switchboard work.

On Friday, electricians at the Suncorp Stadium development site also voted to impose similar protected industrial action under the federal Workplace Relations Act.

ETU Queensland secretary Dick Williams said workers were asking for a pay increase to cover extra costs caused by the state government's new Electrical Safety Act.
