One of the most commonly asked questions for the staff of Decor Classics to answer is, “What is manau cane?”
Rattan is a vine which grows through the forests and jungles of Malaysia and Indonesia. It grows along the ground and into the tops of the trees. Rattan is solid (unlike bamboo which is hollow) and there are many species of rattan available. It is able to be bent and twisted through a heating process.
From rattan, one can obtain “wicker” which is from the core of the rattan. Cane webbing and strand cane is made from the skin of the rattan.
Manau cane (rotan manau or Calamus Manan) is the most expensive cane available and is much sought after for top quality furniture manufacturing and for sports equipment because of its thickness and density. Other varieties of cane do not have the strength that this cane provides.
Manau cane is very easily recognised, as it has a larger diameter than most canes and has a much smoother and attractive surface. Because of the tight tissue arrangement of the manau cane, it is much stronger than other canes and is much more resistant to stress and cracking. This tight tissue arrangement also results in high water resistance. This quality cane also allows for a wider selection of stains as lighter stains can be applied to the cane.
Décor Classics’ manau cane range of suites all have dowelled chair bases (no webbing and no pine supports) and the stress areas are all bound with leather instead of the usual rattan binding, ensuring durability.
