Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has won a Special Award for Innovation of Significant Merit for its new PL range of pipelayers.
The awards ceremony was recently held at the influential International Pipe Layers and Offshore Contractors Association’s (IPLOCA) Annual Convention in Sydney.
Volvo CE was presented with the BP (British Petroleum) award for its significant contribution to innovation related to cross-country onshore pipeline construction.
The PL range of Pipelayers from Volvo is quite different to the traditional track-type tractors with side booms that the industry currently uses, whose original designs date back to the 1930s. These are patented adaptations of excavator-base machines integrated with the latest technology. The PL range of Pipelayers offers lift capacities up to 150 tonnes.
The excavator configuration allows the machines a 360-degree swing with full lifting performance and functionality at all radius positions. Volvo Pipelayers offer high lift capacities resulting from wider gauge, lower centre of gravity, and boom mounting geometry inboard of the track frame, and closer to the machine’s centre-line.
Good stability coupled with the sophisticated Load Management System (LMS) offers good safety.
Volvo Pipelayers are versatile – they are able to perform heavy lift applications in addition to pipe laying and can also be quickly converted to a conventional excavator.
The two large models feature self disassembly and reassembly of track frames and counterweight removal to optimise transportation.
