Bovis Lend Lease ’s team working on the Queensland Government’s Millennium Arts Project at the Queensland Cultural Centre has hosted the launch of an innovative scheme encouraging school leavers to consider trade careers in the building and construction industry.
In an industry first, companies active in Queensland’s building and construction sector have joined forces to support a careers marketing campaign to increase the number of young people taking up apprenticeships or traineeships. It is being driven by the nationwide shortage of skilled labour.
The industry-backed Building and Construction Industry Training Fund (BCITF) Queensland has launched the ‘Be Constructive’ initiative, which highlights the “benefits and the rewards of taking up a career in the industry”. The campaign is supported by the Queensland Government’s Department of Employment and Training and is centred on newspaper, radio, TV and website advertising and direct mail.
BCITF Queensland Chief Executive Greg Shannon says: “Parents and school leavers have long believed that the only way to get ahead in life is by going directly to university. Of course this isn’t the only choice nowadays. The reality is a career in the industry is a very rewarding and lucrative career option that should be seriously pursued when considering life after high school.”
Bovis Lend Lease Senior Site Manager, Peter Kyte says: “Our company is an associate of BCITF Queensland and fully supports this initiative, which will help to ensure the industry it has enough skilled tradespeople for the future.
“We were proud to host the event at the Millennium Arts Project site and offer assistance of our staff and subcontractors to launch this initiative.”
