The creative use of slimline bricks won the La Trobe University, Wodonga accommodation building  the joint Overall Category and Commercial Category at the Think Brick 2012 Horbury Hunt awards.

Using Boral Bricks ’ Boral Elan 50mm bricks in Grey Nuance, La Mesa and Labassa, the slimline bricks play upon the scale of the building and accentuate the linear aspect of the landscape.

Melbourne based Billard Leece Parternship (BLP) was commissioned to design and build the student accommodation on the Greenfield site adjacent to the university.

Rosemary Burne from BLP said, “The Boral Elan slimline brick range proved the perfect palette and profile to fit the concept, taking into account the building’s setting.”

The accommodation block reflects its rural surrounds by using Boral slimline bricks in a blend of grey and brown tones. This gives the building a distinctive character and quality.

Judges described the building as “simultaneously ethereal and weighty, hard and soft.

“These enigmatic qualities are achieved through the bold use of brick as a singular yet supple material. The strong, formal presence of the building is feathered into the landscape through the texture and tones of the brickwork.”

Burne added, “The bricks add genuine design appeal to the building. Receiving the Think Brick 2012 Horbury Hunt Award speaks for itself.”
