Rebuilding with steel
Less than a year after bushfires swept through the Tops conference centre at Stanwell Tops south of Sydney, three new homes built from fire resistant steel building materials from BHP Steel are nearing completion on the site. Steel building technology is an important part of the facility’s rebuilding program which included developing a bushfire hazard plan for the entire site and the deliberate choice of building materials resistant to fire.
The homes all feature steel building frames from Webhall Building Systems made from Zincalume with roofing, fascia and gutter systems made from Colorbond.
“As a builder I knew there were advantages in specifying steel building frames for the new dwellings,” says Glen Phillips, assets manager of the centre. “Termites are also a problem here and steel offers a lot more protection than conventional building materials.
“We value the security of frames made from Zincalume steel and the fact that they are much more structurally sound and straight than alternative materials.”
