A blend of Australian rural architecture and Japanese modular design has helped a northern NSW building and design company scoop the pool in the NSW Awards.
Bush Pavilions at Mullimbimby won three HIA awards for its ‘d’ house, which features separate pavilions with steel walling and roofing made from BHP Colorbond. The ‘d’ house term, which is built on a rural Mullumbimby block, relates to Bush Pavilions’ Archigrid concept which is virtually infinitely interchangeable. It is the home of architect/designer Philip Pratt and partner Melina Pandelides.
Pratt says the awards were an acknowledgement for the small contractor. “We won against million-dollar harbourside mansions by achieving a high quality finish and craftsmanship in the middle market,” he notes. “Being both architect and builder is unusual and our plan is to maintain the boutique design and construction nature of the business so as not to lose the personal touch.”
Bush Pavilions’ Ironbark series of homes combine a strong Japanese influence with the Australian character of hip gable roofs and walls made from Colorbond steel in Armour Grey and Stone colours. The Archigrid modular design and construction concept uses a true post and beam construction method, eliminating load-bearing walls to provide maximum flexibility to the floor plan.
“The series adapts seamlessly to bring the outside in, take the inside out, push the walls to the limit, leave them out altogether or create any combination of possibilities inspired by a person’s unique lifestyle.”
