Bluescope Steel unveils Western Sydney service centre

BlueScope Steel  has unveiled its new Western Sydney Colorbond steel service centre at Erskine Park, New South Wales, that reaches new heights in commercial and industrial building.

The new centre, which will produce 120,000 tonnes of Colorbond steel per year, enough to supply roofing for over 80,000 homes, is the first Sydney-based paint-line for BlueScope Steel.

Built to meet the growing demand of the Sydney housing market, the 20,000m² state of the art paint-line facility includes ancillary buildings and an associated hardstand, designed and constructed by Walker Corporation.

The facility sets a benchmark for future commercial and industrial projects through its creative application of steel throughout the building.

On the exterior, a clever chequerboard pattern creates an eye-catching effect with the help of walling made from Colorbond steel in an array of different colours.

Industrial property specialists, Walker Corporation, were selected by BlueScope Steel to design and build the new centre.

Peter Darling, Project Manager for Walker Corporation explains: “When designing the new service centre, we were looking for something that would prove that industrial complexes can be aesthetically exciting.

“The striking use of walling made from Colorbond steel reflects BlueScope Steel’s development of innovative steel solutions and is an expression of the company’s innovative nature.”

More than just great design, the centre also meets best practice in terms of its manufacturing processes, as well as taking a leadership position on water and energy efficiency.

Rainwater is captured from the roof areas and filtered down into two 750,000 litre tanks to be reused in the paint-line processing equipment, helping to reduce water usage on the site. The storm water system utilised the new Hydrorib pipes to effectively manage stormwater into a detention basin.

The facility was acknowledged as the winner of the 2007 NSW Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Award for Industrial Development due to its best practice in manufacturing processes, as well as taking a leadership position on water and energy efficiency, and visual expression. The facility sets the benchmark for future industrial projects in the Western Sydney area through its creative application of steel.
