BHP donates materials for homes
Three homes destined for low-income Australian families are nearing completion as part of a major effort by charitable organisation Habitat for Humanity Australia.
Operating in 79 countries, the non-profit organisation has built 30 homes in Australia for low-income families who would otherwise have little chance of building their own. The latest three houses under construction are in Bayswater, Victoria.
Those who receive homes pay a price well below current market values and receive a no-profit, interest-free loan.
Habitat for Humanity Australia CEO Michael Pailthorpe said the organisation’s ability to deliver on projects depended on the level of community and business donations of cash, materials and labour.
“These projects could not happen without the support of volunteers and corporate sponsorship such as the donation of the roofing materials by BHP Coated Steel Australia.”
The three homes feature corrugated roofing and ridge caps made from BHP Colorbond prepainted steel, contrasted with Colorbond steel fascias, gutters and barges.
Mr Pailthorpe said the lightweight, high strength advantages of Colorbond steel would create homes with durability and aesthetic appeal.
